The only company they have is the echoes/ghostly whispers/silent screams of their own thoughts/memories/yearnings.

The Structure Have Ears

If they think the construction can hide conversations, think again. Walls, including those other things, are often of listening. Ancient stories warn us that walls have ears, and while this may seem like a legend, the reality is often unsettling.

Innocence Lost's Burden
